Cosmo's Ice Cream and Cupcakes Opens

By admin - Posted on 02 April 2005

Deluxe Town Diner proprietor Don Levy launched his new addition -- an ice cream and bakery called Cosmo's -- this week:

The shop is half a block west of the Town Diner on Mt. Auburn St. in Coolidge Square. H2otown visited today and ordered up a cupcake ($2), a chocolate number coated with, not frosting, we think, but ganache -- a dense chocolate paste made of melted chocolate and cream. The cake portion was wonderful, springy, strong chocolate flavor, and not too sweet. The topping, of course, was, as it should be, very sweet.

The interior is lovingly fitted out with vintage soda fountain fixtures, and the shelves feature some items that H2otown remembers from her high school years in Puerto Rico, notably Chupachups lollipops and watermelon soda.

The shop was the subject of some controversy before it opened as the East Watertown Betterment Society opposed its opening due to fears of it becoming too popular and thus making it harder to park in Coolidge Square. (For the record, H2otown parked right in front of the store to take this picture, in the middle of Saturday afternoon. In H2otown's opinion, EWBA continues to make the beginners' mistake of equating a healthy neighborhood with how fast you can drive through it and how easy it is to park; if this were true, luxury homes would be built on freeway offramps).

The same store window featured in this story was photographed once before for an H2otown story when it was used to feature an antiwar art project.

I thoroughly agree that EWBA is quick to worry. It's a tiny little store and couldn't create much traffic if it tried. Nice to have a Watertown option for ice cream and treats (although we love Rancatore's in Belmont). Just went for the first time and met up with friends there. Great place!

I note that Cosmo's also has the space to the east of the barbershop -- the space that the yoga studio used to be in. Right now there's some equipment in it, but it would be great if there was eventually a few tables for people to sit at.

I just visited Cosmo's today, very cute store inside.
The cupcakes are very tasty, but I must admit I was very disappointed by their size. They are tiny and for $2.00 a whack, it seemed a bit overpriced.

I noticed the price too. My theory is this: people -- (including me) are probably willing to pay $2 for a pastry if they're allowed to hang around in a pleasant eatery and eat it, maybe have a chat with a friend. For takeaway, I concentrate more on good prices in bulk (can I buy half a dozen for a dinner gathering at a price I think is good)? I think others do too.

My theory is that people are willing to pay more per item at a place where they can sit because the price includes "table rent," and, in a sense, the luxury of the time to sit and enjoy something.
