H2otown Restaurant Guide

Watertown is a great food town -- we rate nearly 20 restaurants per square mile. It's possible we can all go out to eat simultaneously. Scroll down to sample Watertown's culinary richness or log in with your opinion on local eateries and specialty food markets.

Right on the corner down from Mimi's is Acapulco. Those of us who remember the walk-down on Newbury Street in the late '80s still missed the original (forced out to JP by the traditional quintupling rent) excellent Mexican fare. The Watertown version is owned and run by cousins of the JP branch. The offerings are mostly house specialties, with a small offering of anglo traditional dishes (the eternal taco/enchilada/burrito triangle).

There are several friends of mine who insist upon takeout from Acapulco if they're coming over.

HtH.

Ooh, right, thank you. I have to put in Wild Willy's too; and the Meat Spot (because we're doing specialty food markets too).

Town Shawarma, 580 Mount Auburn Street,(617) 923-2999

Owner is really nice. Very reasonable prices - paper plates. Hummus is great, with lots of sumac on top. Falafel is very good. I am vegetarian but I have been told that people travel far to this place for the meat. Last time we were there he had an entire lamb in the oven.

Oh, thank you for this one. I have actually eaten here, but I was having a heck of a time remembering the actual name of the place.

They serve some food.

Where is Tiki - In

Why is it not listed in the directory

Tiki Inn is in Watertown Square right on Mt. Auburn Street.

Its called Sensational Foods and it is really good!

Ah! That's a good one. I'll add that.

What are you claiming BS on, o anonyfriend?

Lily's was on Galen Street. It's reopening? That place was delicious.

I claim BS!

I just found a nice new cafe, Sweet Sensations, on Bigelow Ave. Great coffee and wonderful sandwiches, I highly recommend the pasties too. The manager said they are currently open from 7am to 4 pm everyday.

Joe's Variety Store on 278 Orchard St. they have the best subs in town for dollar they are huge and stuffed with meat, also most are $5!! deli meat here also costs about 40% less than the super market

Marzo just opened where Red sauce was. Friends say it's tasty...

Red sauce is now a new place called Marzo with roman pizza and gelato-- friends have said it's good.

Also Ararat house of bbq has closed and Lily's is opening there which used to be on Mt auburn st

How do I go about requesting that an entry be added for Marzo 29? I've got some comments, but I figured it was worth waiting for an official entry.

Has anyone tried out Asiana Fusion? Where is it? I heard they have Kareoke!

The restaurant is on the corner of Waverly and Main, right behind Ricci's Liquor. And sadly, that is the problem. The prices are right (they have a $6.95 lunch buffet), and the owner (Joyce I believe) is very hospitable. But every restaurant that inhabits this space fails due to lack of exposure. (Hence, your inquiry. "Where is it?")

They do have Karaoke on Friday nights, but the selections are minimal, and most of the book is in Chinese. I just passed by and the place was empty (Friday night).

Another big faux pas: They have a huge sign that says to come join them for football on their big screen TV (seems about 42") at the bar. Problem? They are closed on Sundays.

I'm afraid they are destined to go the way of the Dodo Bird.

My friends and I went to Asiana Fusion and had a great time last friday night. Plus their MaiTai and the Martinis were awesome!!! We sang Kareoke and everyone loved it. Plus, my boyfriend really like the TV there for the Monday night football.

The Asiana Fusion in Watertown is Awesome! the food is great the owner is
very outgoing and friendly and knows her Korean food!
The portions are big and the apps Rock!
And yes they have Kareoke!
Go in and try it out and tell them the Canadian Geography teacher said HI!

While the location isn't the most appealing the food here is really great. The stone pot is excellent. We have been here several times and have always been happy with what we got.

I went to Donohue's on Sunday Morning around 930am. No lines or waiting. Actually there were only a few people there but the breakfast was very good. For a town with great breakfast places I give this a big thumb up.

Stay Away From Ruby Tuesday in the Arsenal Mall

Visit #1 - Birthday guy got the totally wrong meal, so they took it back. Three requests later, never got his meal. No apologies from management or staff.

Visit #2 - Wrong meal TWICE, second time the same meal was delivered back cold and still wrong. Waitress argued w/ customer until shown menu - oops, her bad. Manager came over and harassed customer. Neighboring cust jumped in to correct manager. To avoid further problems, cust asked to pay for drink and went to leave. Manager followed cust through lot to car and would not break off assault until threatened with 911 call and car doors were locked. Shoppers in the lot were stunned. Formal complaints pending. Restaurant should be renamed "BLOOD RED Tuesday".

Horrible service, even worse management.

My wife and I have been there several times. The food is great and the menu is very eclectic (to say the least). The new owner Kellie has done wonders with the interior decor! I love this place and I hope she does well there.

Corner of Main and Waverly Ave behind Ricci's Liquor store

I wanted to post about my very bad experiences I have had at Casa De Pedro restaurant. The past two times I have been there I have left horrified.
I was there this passed Friday night at 9:30 pm and had a drink with a friend. When the bartender asked if we wanted another drink we asked for water. His response was, "if you don't want a drink there are other people waiting for your seats". I was shocked at his rudeness. I asked if that meant we weren't welcomed to stay if we didn't immediately get another drink? He just put his arms in the air, suggesting, Yes, that's what I am saying. The last time I was there, 8pm on a thursday night, there were so few people they wanted to close early and just told us they weren't going to serve us more than one drink, and the kitchen was closed. WE are talking 8pm! Stay away!

Anyone remember the On The Square restaurant by the Riverbend Park office bldg? They had to close 13 yrs ago when the landlord kicked them out. The owners said they were going to open elsewhere, does anyone know where?

This was a great place for lunch, complete with table linen.

FYI Two of the principals in the On the Square venture have returned to the area. The restaurant is called Savinos located in Cushing Square, Belmont. (right over the hill on Common St.) The address is 449 Common St. (617-484-3499) The restaurant is gorgeous - very Tuscan in atmosphere. They serve Italian-Mediterranean cuisine, and have a full liquor license. The food is great - open for dinner 5-10 pm Monday thru Saturday. Go for dinner, or for appetizers and a glass of wine. You won't be sorry. Check it out!!!

I was thrilled to see the Mango Grill open in Pedro's former spot on Main Street. I had seen a sign during the summer that an "Ital-Mex" restaurant was going in and that turned my stomach. Except for Asian fusion type places, most other "combos" are dreadful.

I stopped at Mango for lunch today and was pleased with it. The cook and waiter were very warm, sweet guys. This is not a Mexican place; it's Latin food. I had a chile relleno which was more like a stuffed pepper - not hot or spicy. They offer it with vegetables or pork inside. The pork was good - think Spanish flavors versus "Mexican."

The highlight of lunch, though, was flan for dessert - flan! At first I didn't think I'd want that, but I want to support new businesses in the Square. I was pleasantly surprised. The flan was like a dense cheesecake with a rich caramel sauce. It's worth the trip just for that and the good bold coffee they served.

While there, two parties came in for take-out, which they had asked about. I eavesdropped on their conversations with the waiter and chef. Mango does have a lunch menu, but it's not posted on the window. They have take-out and will deliver locally. The other patrons and I encouraged them to advertise that, and welcomed them to the area.

The menu has elaborate salads, seafood and other meat dishes.
Next time I'll go with one of the more "Latin" dishes as opposed to something that makes me think of Mexican food, but has a different flavor.

Now, if we could just get a good coffeehouse/ice cream place in that old Sir Speedy's spot, Main Street would be hopping - don't you think?

Papa Ginos at the Watertown Mall just re-opened, and now it is right next to Best Buy. Bonus button for H2otown members who voted in the 2006 general election
