Massage parlors raise eyebrows

By H2otown - Posted on 06 July 2007

Mikey fears that a few local businesses are attracting the wrong kinds of customers:

"I'm not sure if it's the floor-to-ceiling lace curtains that cover every inch of window and door space at Sakura, 115 Mt Auburn St, or the creepy attempt at an alluring model on the B/W photo copied flyers for Serenity, 123 Mt. Auburn, but something is going very wrong here.

For those who have not noticed, Mt. Auburn now offers two new places offering "body shampoos" and the ever popular "Thai chair massage". Both Sakura and Serenity are open late, seemingly have a woman working as lookout, and are attracting lots of guilty looking men to this once quiet stretch of Mt. Auburn street every single night."

So what do you think?

As a man who really ewnjoys a legit massage - to work out soreness from sports, or just to relax - I say the more legitimate massage parlors, the better. I usually go to Waddington's once every three or four months.

I've never been to a non-legit (?) massage parlor. Is "Thai chair massage" code for something unseemly?

The only massage I ever had was in an open-sided tent with dozens of tables on a town green in Greeley, Colorado, after riding 82 miles as part of the five day Ride The Rockies event. Oy, it was marvelous.

The whole thing about the flyer with the model does sound creepy, though.

for an honest-to-goodness, stress-reduction, injury managment etc... muscular therapy (massage) session check out the recently (last year) relocated Muscular Therapy Institute/MTI (now under the Cordiva Institute) on Morse Street in Watertown: http://www.cortiva.com/locations/mti/clinic/

Went there last week. Actually was one of the most productive massages I've ever had. I had a nagging pinched nerve in my neck and also a pulled muscle in my back. Needless to say I NEEDED a massage bad. No BS crap. A legit massage. Well this place delivered! I feel much better. Don't be so quick to jump on Sakura as a front for prostitution. Give it a chance!

Found this craigslist posting:

I see nothing wrong with a legitimate, licensed massage spa (calling it a parlor just makes it sound creepy no matter what, to me), and Sakura's website seems harmless enough:

Oddly enough, I don't think I've noticed there was a second one, despite going by there practically every night this week.

(My only massage experience was at a tiny spa in the Bahamas, and it was so relaxing I fell asleep.)

I logged on so that I could ask anyone if they thought this place was sketchy, only to find you all blogging about it! IMO, this place just gives off a "happy ending" kind of vibe.

I think yo have a vivid imagination. Do you live by this place, that it causes you such distress?

I"m confident that if the establishments are in fact of ill repute, that the local gendarmes will quickly and quietly move them on to greener pastures.

Get real..."Mikey" your first post is a stereotype attack on a donwtown business that is far from sketchy or creepy...very unfair...hopefully this wont be a pattern of the content you intend on contributing to this forum.

Ok so this thread aroused my interest. (Sorry could resist the pun) What can I say; it’s a change of pace from politics. So I did some craigslist surfing.
The establishment in Watertown is listed under the "therapeutic services”. Were they in business of ‘happy endings’, they’d be listing under “erotic services”.

This link on the other hand (oops another Freudian slip) appears under erotic services
Case in point: http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/ers/367132420.html

BTW, are some of these people posting under this category idiots?
I couldn’t believe some of the graphic adds which include the services provided and the prices for them!! Why not just say hey Mr. Vice Squad, I’m a prostitute, here’s my number come arrest me????? Good lord. I’m no prude, but some of this stuff made be blush. And that ought to tell you something.

Careful what you're "researching" it got Pete Townsend in a world of hurt.

I believe that police depts not only monitor those ads but also post them to lure in the Johns for some quick bulk arrests.

Ever see that NBC show "To Catch A Predator"? Craigs List and Myspace are like a perverts Mecca. Someone call Chris Hansen and lets solve this once and for all.

If this business were located on some back alley somewhere or was run out of someones house I would be much more open to the Mickey email...but these folks appeat to be hiding in the wide open with only curtains that have the nerve of covering the an entire window right on Mt Auburn Street.

Any "John" could go in find out very quickly if this place was legit or not and if its not word would get around and it wouldnt be there much longer.

If/when the true nature of this business is revealed I will apologize for being wrong but I would tend to want to give a business owner the benefit of the doubt before I run them out of town with no evidence of any wrong doing.

When I saw the pretty blue awning I thought, "Wow, right down the end of our street! I should send David over for a theraputic massage!"

Now I am wondering..... :)

I have no idea what a Thai chair massage is. Like Jim, I wonder is that code? The place doesn't look like anything but a legit business to me and their website specifically states no erotic massage. I am more offended by the facade and duct tape covered signage of the check cashing place next door and even commented on how it makes our commuinty look like crap. I think I will send David over for a massage - their prices are better than Waddingtons. The body shampoo sounds a little weird, but it also sounds relaxing, too. No weirder than a Turkish bath, I suppose. I am with Cd - lets not run anyone out of town on a rail. It could turn out to be a superb place to relax and renew right on Mt. Auburn.

Please, check cashing place, fix your sign, it looks disgusting.

I would suspect the check cashing place could be in violation of the city signage code...may want to send a call in to codes...I can't imagine duct tape for any exteneded period time is acceptable downtown signage...this area may also be in the historic district.

In professional settings, massage involves the client being treated while lying on a massage table, sitting upright in a massage chair, or lying on a pad on the floor. Except for modalities such as Acupressure, Shiatsu, Tui Na, Thai Massage, or Barefoot Deep Tissue, the massage subject is generally unclothed or partially unclothed, also referred to as disrobed, and their body would be "draped" with towels or sheets. The practice of covering the parts of the body that are not being massaged is referred to as draping and its practice varies from one part of the world to another. In addition to making a professional statement and providing a boundary, draping helps keep the client warm which aids in the relaxation response. In some countries it is required that certain areas such as the genitals on both genders and the breast/nipple area on women be draped at all times. In the United States draping is a standard of the profession, while in other parts of the world, such as some parts of Europe, it is not practiced at all. In most forms of massage, the session begins with the client face up, referred to as supine, or face down, referred to as prone, for the first part of the session and then the client rolls over for the second half. Relaxation is necessary for benefits to be achieved.

This is a thai masssage chair...looks like a modified bench thats all:

The odd hours aside, it seems that the place is legit. I've seen Thai Massage described as Passive Yoga. Too bad they don't list their prices on the website...I could use a good massage when my lower back acts up again.
