Z: Restaurant Closed Marzo 29

By H2otown - Posted on 08 July 2006

Marzo 29 is in the building formerly occupied by Red Sauce in the Arsenal on the Charles, right next to the Arsenal Center for the Arts. They serve Italian food, Roman-style pizza, and gelato. For additional comments on the place see entries here and here.

Marzo 29's antipasto is a very nice mix of cheeses, meats, including a warm shrimp and leek combo, roasted peppers and arugula. Highly recommended. Although the toppings are top-notch, we've found the pizza crust to be a bit tough. But it seems to be improving over time. Their pasta offerings are interesting, but we found their "paninis," which aren't very panini-like, to be pretty boring. In the dessert category, probably a third of the servings of gelato I've had contained a lot of ice crystals, but the flavors are pretty nice and appropriately intense. You probably won't confuse it with the best that the North End has to offer, but it's a whole lot easier to walk or drive to the Arsenal than it is to get to the North End! Lastly, the staff is quite friendly and helpful. I guess this sounds like a somewhat mixed review, but I'd consider Marzo 29 to be a marked improvement on Red Sauce. I don't think restaurateur Joey Crugnale has a hit the caliber of Bertucci's, or even Naked Fish, on his hands, but I think Marzo 29 is a decent addition to Watertown's restaurant scene.

Yes, the Marzo 29 restaurant has closed for good, thank you.

Wow, that seems really quick

Signage at the formerly Marzo 29 location now indicates that La Casa de Pedro will be moving in next month. I wonder what will happen to the old La Casa de Pedro space on Main St.?

I went to dinner there last night and was very happy with my meal. A good cesar salad and pizza that reminded me of Italy, thin- but not too thin, cripy and chewy. Very tastey. The staff is great too. Check it out if you have a chance. I suggest splitting a pizza and a salad between two people. It should be more than enough to eat.

Stopped by Marzo 29 last week on a weeknight and found a very nice outdoor cafe overlooking a fountain. We tried their pizza and found it to be very good. I will give it a few more tries before I can comment on it further. Indoors is beautiful with high ceilings and lots of seating. Nice bar near the Gelati freezer case. For more info, check out my restaurant blog for Newton and surrounding towns.

We stopped by a week ago (Sept. 15th) on a Friday night and found the place closed with a sign on the door that read something like "We're temporarily closed due to circumstances beyond our control". Wonder what that means? Anyone know?

when it was Red Sauce, the same notice was posted when it closed.

It does seem like Marzo 29 is probably closed for good. And just as I was really growing to like the place! I believe the Marzo 29 signage above the doors has been removed. I looked inside a couple weeks ago and it appeared as though they might be making some changes (I think the gelato freezer was gone, for instance). My guess/hope is that we'll see yet another restaurant open there eventually under the same ownership. My favorite of the first three was Naked Fish, followed by Marzo and, in a distant third place, Red Sauce.
